Ever since Beats by Dr. Dre carved its way into the market, it seems like every celebrity and their grandmother want to produce a signature line of ultra-chic headphones. We’ve seen offerings from J.Y. Park, 50 Cent, and even Snooki. Now, we can finally add Ludacris to the mix, as his signature Soul lineup of headphones is at last available on the market. With that in mind, we’re going to go ahead and cover the SL300 headphone model, even though we tend to shy away from these celebrity-endorsed pocket busters. Why? you might ask. Because if the man’s music is as good as it is, we’re guessing the headphones perform rather swell, too. To find out what we really though, check out our full headphone review below!

Soul by Ludacris SL300

Let me first say that I am not saying the SL300 headphones are a knockoff—they’re certainly their own variety of monstrosity—but the looks appear to be influenced by what Monster is doing. That being said, we actually liked the fit of the Soul by Ludacris SL300 headpnones more than most Beats models, as there are fewer contact points. We found Luda-Juice’s signature brand much more enjoyable to listen to over extended periods of time. And, of course, the headphones come with an army of lush padding that tends to help-out, too. An interesting design feature that puts the SL300 headphones above any Beats noise-canceling model is its passive playback mode. In this mode, users can continue to listen to their music, even when noise-cancellation is turned off. This is a tremendous boon for the brand, as there’s nothing more annoying than losing performance when the batteries die.

Sound and Performance

If you’re looking to listen to your favorite rock, punk, classical, or jazz tracks with the SL300 headphones, our best advice is to simply stay away. Like the Beats, the SL300 over-ear headphones come loaded to the gills with an enhanced bass and noise-canceling experience that’s best suited to modern music. That being said, if you’re looking for a lot of fat low-end, the SL300s are your new gravy train. The bass is rounded and buttery, and in fact, less staggered than the bass found in the Beats. We also liked the punchy highs and smooth mids, though there’s an obvious focus on the lower register. This tends to create a flatter performance, but makes the SL300 ideal for the dedicated hip-hop listener.

Overall Value

At the same price as a comparable model Beats number, the Soul by Ludacris SL300 headphones can’t be knocked for its bargain value. All in all, we liked the sound quality for hip-hop use, and we even preferred the design to any Monster variety we’ve tried thus far. Still, the SL300s are a specific set of headphones that won’t be ideal for all users. If you’re a modern music fanatic, the $300 price tag will be no sweat: Otherwise, your money is best kept elsewhere.
