Let’s face it, y’all: Skullcandy has never been distinguished by sound quality alone. Sure, they’ve managed to develop a few good headphones, but when one talks about the manufacturer, they’re typically referring to the company’s unique sense of style. The Skullcandy Icon 2 headphones are no different, offering a listening experience which could stand improvements, wrapped in a chic cover. That isn’t to say the headphones don’t come with their own pros, though we’re a bit overwhelmed by the heftier cons. Either way, for our full take on these headphones, read on!
Design and Comfort Rating:

As expected, the Skullcandy Icon 2s come in a barrage of dizzying colors, patterns, and designs: All of which are pretty solid, though we have a feeling they’re aimed more at the younger crowed than at us grizzled audiophiles. That being said, if you’re looking for a way to make your headphones stand out in a crowd, the Skullcandy Icon 2s are a great place to start. Sadly, the design is about the only thing we can rave about in terms of comfort: Unlike the Icon Softs, there’s no leather here, as the headband has been swapped for a more rubberized feel. This tended to keep the headphones on our head better, but there’s still a profound lack of tightness that had them sliding loosy-goosey around the room and off our noggins. It’s a curios predicament, as we assume by the included snowboarding extras the Skullcandy Icon 2 is meant to be used on the slopes during lots of activity.
Sound Quality and Performance Rating:

We’ll put this as bluntly as we can: The sound quality with the Skullcandy Icon 2 is simply anemic. Bass is almost non-existent, even when we loaded the headphones with such bass-intensive tracks as our favorite dubstep numbers. Likewise, the highs had little to no punch, while the mids were unremarkable at best. All in all, though, we hardly expected anything else, and as a budget set of cans, the sound is doing alright as an equivalent to common electronic devices’ stock phones. However, we certainly wouldn’t recommend the Skullcandy Icon 2s for their audio performance—at least not as much as we might recommend them for their style.

Overall Value Rating:

We like to think we call it as we see it, so here’s the straight skinny: The Skullcandy Icon 2s will likely appeal to a younger crowd that’s less concerned with audio quality and more worried about chic. The headphones come with some pretty cool designs, though it’s at the total sacrifice of both performance and comfort. That being said, these headphones are $30, which fits into any budget. If any of that sounds like a bargain to you, or a corner you’re willing to cut, then by all means get these headphones. Otherwise, your audiophile needs are best satisfied elsewhere.
