Skullcandy FIX – A Decent Set of Headphones with An Eery Good Fit

Skullcandy FIX – A Decent Set of Headphones with An Eery Good Fit

We aren’t ashamed to admit it: We are not always fans of headphones released by Skullcandy. But though most of the manufacturer’s line-up is cheap, plastic, and endlessly teen-oriented, we couldn’t help but take notice of their latest, higher-end in-ear buds, the Skullcandy Fix. With a sleek design, smooth iPod controls, and an unbelievably good fit, we’re surprised to see the same embossed skull logo on the ear caps. All in all, the company has really outdone themselves, offering a pair of $70 in-ears that finally sound as good as they look. For our full thoughts on this trend-busting pair of buds, check below for the headphone review!

Comfort and Design

Skullcandy FIX

Skullcandy FIX

If Skullcandy is known for anything—aside from clogging up the checkout lane at our local entertainment store—it’s flashy designs. Typically, we see a rainbow of options with each new release, which is why the stark, black design of the Fix surprised us. At first glance, the headphones appear to be nothing too special. They’re certainly classy, but with a basic gloss finish and only a single silver embellishment (the skull logo mentioned earlier) we’re surprised it’s even from the same company. Which leads us to the fit: These babies are unbelievably secure in the ear. We haven’t got a clue how this was managed, as there’s nothing blatantly special about the ear tip design, but we can’t get enough of this secure placement. The Fix fits perfect, and if we didn’t know better, we’d assume they cost more than the $70 listing price.

Performance and Audio Quality

Rating: ★★★☆☆

However, based entirely on the sound we’re not too surprised to find a $70 price tag attached. In comparison to the other Skullcandy models we’ve looked at, the Fix sounded surprisingly warm. The highs were somewhat crunched, and the mids weren’t quite buttery, but we did find a satisfying deep low-end. However, when the volume is turned up, most of these benefits disappear with the breeze. The bass tended to distort quite a lot, and though the highs and mids remained relatively the same, we still missed that certain oomph we crave in more expensive headphones. All in all, the headphones were more than adequate for the casual listener at the gym, though we have a feeling the audiophiles amongst us will have a lot to gripe about.

Overall Value

Rating: ★★★★☆

All in all, though, we still consider the Skullcandy Fix a tremendous value for the money. The design is superb, and that fit still has us salivating. Likewise, though the sound quality isn’t equal to a pair $400 Bose cans, we don’t suppose it should be in the first place. The performance is perfectly decent for the money, and with no obvious drawbacks and a cheap price of ownership, we feel the Fix is quite the bargain, especially for fans of the Skullcandy line-up.
