Shure SE425 Sound-Isolating Earphones: Wide Range, Stellar Design, Better Sound

In terms of headphone brand recognition, there’s hardly a company alive that gets more hype than Shure. The sound powerhouse has been pumping out incredible headphones for two decades, rocking our ears with an incredible array of products that all take our tunes to higher levels than we ever thought possible. As of late, the company has been busy producing a new line with a few (but mostly beneficial) tweaks. One of these new additions is the Shure SE425 in-ear headphones, a ruggedly constructed and superbly finished product that produces all the punch we could ever want and more. It’s a pricy model with a wide range of musical potential, but if you’re looking for superior quality, there’s no better place to hunt. For our full thoughts on this classically-inspired set of headphones, check below beyond the break!

Design and Comfort

Rating: ★★★★☆

Shure SE425 headphone

Shure SE425

Overall, we’ve seen a fair bit of improvement in the Shure SE425 over the last in-ear headphones, the SE420. Most notably, the bulbous teardrop look of the previous lineup has been ditched for a more modern, rubberized mold type ear canal plug. The plug itself fits nicely in the ear, but does require a fair amount of wiggling to set into place. In essence, the buds will need to be twisted in, and the cable then draped over the back of the ear. This might sound annoying and uncomfortable—and for some users, we’re sure it will be! However, we had no trouble getting used to the concept, and ultimately found it quite comfortable. As for the cable, this puppy is massive at 64 inches, and durable to the end. The headphones themselves are also heavy in-hand, displaying a fair amount of durability that puts our worried minds at ease.

Sound Quality and Performance

Rating: ★★★★★

If you know anything about Shure headphones as a brand, you’re likely sitting on the edge of your seat, waiting desperately for a full description of the SE425’s musical performance. We hate to disappoint, so here goes: These in-ear buds sound simply incredible. The noise cancellation is unbelievable, completely cocooning us in its warmth. The highs are so sparkling it hurts, while the mids have that perfect, buttery texture we’re always looking for. Meanwhile, the bass holds down the low-end like a champ, even during heavier genres like dance or hip-hop. There’s no specific field that works best with these buds, though, so if you’re looking for a dedicated djing set-up, you’re not likely to find your soulmate with the SE425.

Overall Value

Rating: ★★★★½

There’s no doubt about it: The SE425 headphones are a pricy set of buds, clocking in at around $299.99 on the street. That being said, Shure applies a generous two-year warranty to the headphones, and considering the level of musical performance offered here, we easily feel the phones are worth their price of entry.
