Sennheiser HD 598 Headphones – Beautiful, Eargonomic, and Rock-Star Sound

No bones about it: The Sennheiser HD 598 headphones are one of the classiest set of over-ear headphones we’ve peeped in a long time. With wood accents, lush padding, incredibly comfortable ear-cups, and enough sound quality to rock the pants off Bono, we’re just about in love with these headphones. Sennheiser is a brand that’s known for quality, and their latest entry sets an already high bar even higher. Design and Comfort

Sennheiser HD 598

Sennheiser HD 598

As stated, the Sennheiser HD 598 headphone are just about the darn best looking pair of headphones we’ve ever laid eyes on. We know that’s a subjective opinion, and that most of our readers would suggest some variety of the Beats lineup as their favorite, but we seriously can’t help ourselves: We’re enamored with the beige and tank padding, the burled wood accents, the glossy speaker-esque end caps, and then unbelievably comfortable fit. The Sennheiser HD 598 headphones fit nicely on-top our noggin, and the tight fit on our ears was just heavenly. As for accessories, the Sennheiser HD 598 headphones come with a carrying case for easy storage, a fully user replaceable cable, and a 3.5 mm headphone plug adapter. Oh, and did we mention these headphones were light? We have never seen a pair that weighs less than these bad boys—as if the good looks weren’t enough, she’s even slim.

Sound Quality and Performance

Rating: ★★★★½

As if we had any doubts, this pair of Sennheiser headphones performed admirably in terms of sound quality. The treble offered a bit more definition than we’re used to with these kinds of cans, surprising us with its clarity and presence. Likewise, the bass was nice and rumbling, providing a stellar low-end for music and movies alike. Finally, the mid-range came in with some sweet, buttery tones to round out the package. Still, we feel this is a pair of headphones best meant for the true audiophile, rather than the MP3 toting commuter. These puppies really shine when plugged into a console or headphone amplifier, producing a slightly less engaging sound when connected to a smaller device. All in all, it’s an incredible experience for the dedicated listener, and if you’re looking for a truly well-rounded performance, the Sennheiser HD 598 headphones are a shoe-in.

Overall Value

Rating: ★★★★☆

We know others may say otherwise, but we truly think the Sennheiser HD 598s are a value at the asking price of $200. The design is flawless (and sexy in a kind of woodblock way) while the sound performance is top-notch, no matter who its pitted against. For that kind of production quality, we feel two Benjamins is a bargain, though again, potentially not for the more every-day oriented consumer. All in all, this new addition to the Sennheiser lineup gets our full recommendation.
