For some reason—Okay, a lot of reasons—the Bluetooth-enabled headphone wave didn’t take off quite like we hoped it would way back in 2,000. Granted, this likely had something to do with the limited amount of A2DP streaming protocol bandwidth power holding back audio quality, as well as the astronomical prices. Still, we were very much looking forward to a day when all of our portable cans were cordless, and all of our calls could be received without so much as moving one, lazy muscle. We’re still looking forward to it, in fact. As such, we’re more than happy to see the Tenqa REMXD Bluetooth headphones hitting the market sometime during early February—and at the ever agreeable and wallet-friendly $39 price point.
The new stereo headphones line by accessory maker Tenqa serve as a sort of case-in-point where modern Bluetooth capabilities are concerned. The technology has come a long way since its inception, and now that most of us don’t need to buy a Bluetooth card anymore, the ye olden wireless option is finally gaining steam. Innovations in streaming protocol now allow for a lot higher audio quality, too, which is a tremendous boon for audiophiles like us. But enough babbling about the modern age: Let’s get to the headphones!
All in all, though the REMXDs will only cost about half the price of a decent pair of Beats in-ears, they still look to offer a tremendous amount of performance value. To begin with, there’s the standard A2DP playback and control functionality—that’s what allows you to mess with your iPhone or iPod’s volume while it’s in use, as well as answer calls when they come in. On the subject of calls, there’s a microphone tucked into the plastic of the headset. We’re not sure where, but we greatly appreciate the more discreet set-up, as opposed to a bulky dangle that’s left hanging near your throat for optimal train-wobble-smashing: We really hope you know what we’re talking about.
Naturally, the REMXD comes with a battery that allows it to operate as a wireless set of headphones. Thankfully, though, Tenqa promises a lengthy amount of performance from the cans. When they finally appear on shelves in early February, you can expect the REMXDs to last about 22.5 hours where talk time is concerned, and upwards of 280 hours for simple standby. Best of all, this is all delivered with a single 3.4 hour charge.
And if you’re looking for a more classical listening experience, the headphones will also come with a traditional cable for all your non-Bluetooth needs. All in all, we’re stoked to see the cans hit shelves, and you can be sure we’ll have a full write-up on the REMXD’s audio performance once we’ve finally got our hands on a pair. In the meantime, feel free to salivate over the promotional shots tucked along the side of this article.
